What to Do When a Truck Tire Blows Out on the Highway

A tire blowout on a loaded truck is one of the most stressful moments a driver can face. The truck may pull hard to one side, the noise is sudden, and traffic keeps moving around you. How you react in the first few seconds matters a lot. This guide covers what to do during a blowout, what to do after you stop, and how to get help fast anywhere in the Ottawa area.

During the Blowout: First 10 Seconds

  • Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands. The truck will pull toward the side of the failed tire.
  • Do not slam the brakes. Hard braking can throw the truck off balance or cause a jackknife.
  • Ease off the accelerator and let the truck slow down on its own.
  • Keep the truck going straight. Make small steering corrections only.
  • Turn on your hazard lights as soon as you can do it safely.

Getting Off the Road Safely

Once the truck has slowed down, signal and move toward the shoulder gradually. Try to stop as far from live traffic as possible, on firm and level ground. If you are on a ramp or a curve, keep rolling slowly to a safer spot if it is possible to do so, but never drive far on a flat tire. A damaged tire can come apart and harm the wheel, the brake lines and the body of the truck.

After You Stop

  1. Keep your hazard lights on and put out your reflective triangles or warning devices.
  2. Stay on the side away from traffic. Do not stand between your truck and passing vehicles.
  3. Look at the tire from a safe distance. Do not try to lift or change a heavy truck tire alone on a highway shoulder.
  4. Call for professional roadside help and give your exact location (highway, direction, nearest exit or kilometre marker).

Why Truck Tires Blow Out

Most blowouts are preventable. The most common causes are:

  • Under-inflation, which builds heat inside the tire
  • Overloading beyond the tire’s rated capacity
  • Worn tread or a damaged sidewall
  • Road debris like metal pieces, potholes and curb strikes
  • Old or poorly repaired tires

How to Reduce the Risk

  • Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, not after a long drive.
  • Walk around the truck and look at every tire before each trip.
  • Watch for bulges, cuts, uneven wear and cracked sidewalls.
  • Never run mismatched tires on a dual set.
  • Replace tires that are worn or damaged instead of hoping they last one more trip.
